Lawn, garden show set

Preparations are under way for the Spring Lawn and Garden Show, scheduled for Feb. 19-20 at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center in Shawnee.

A long list of exhibitors will be on site to answer questions and give advice on topics such as lawn maintenance, landscaping ideas and irrigation systems.

"This will be a great event," said Ken Etchieson, general manager of the Expo Center. "With the exhibitors and vendors being from this area, visitors will get genuine how-to tips that will apply to their lawn or garden right here in Shawnee, Okla. These hints and tips will be practical, useful and affordable."

Etchieson said another advantage will be the availability of the equipment visitors might decide they need.

Visitors interested in water gardens will have the opportunity to visit with the Water Garden Club. Tom Terry and the Multi-County Master Gardeners will give demonstrations on ways to involve children in gardening chores, using hands-on activities for youngsters and their parents.

Other organizations and businesses at the event will include Complete Landscape, Anderson Landscaping, Grissom Implement Inc., ADT Security Systems Inc., Luman's Irrigation and Landscaping, Shawnee Feed Center, Pond Pro Shop, Sooner Curb & Border, Tranquil Moments Water Garden, Midwest Stone Specialists, The Shawnee News-Star, Don's Plants, Iron Tough Vinyl Fencing, Dinsmore Tractor Sales Inc., Buford White's Ace Building Center, OSU Extension Service, city of Shawnee, Shawnee Beautification Committee, Shawnee Water Gardeners Club and Gordon Cooper Technology Center.

"It is going to be a good deal, and we are excited to be a part of it," said Lance Bienhoff of Grissom Implement, Inc.

Grissom will have a display that includes lawn and garden equipment, compact utility tractors and portable power equipment -- all used for work ranging from lawn maintenance to gardening.

Kay Gomez with Luman's Irrigation and Landscaping said their exhibit will include specialty trees and shrubs, flowering plants and flowering baskets.

"We will have a sample of all we offer," Gomez said.

Gardening presentations are scheduled hourly from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Sponsoring the Spring Lawn and Garden Show are the Shawnee Council of Garden Clubs, the Shawnee Home Builders Association and Unity Health Center. Organizers are the Greater Shawnee Area Chamber of Commerce Beautification Committee and the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center.

Advance tickets are $4 for adults, while children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied with an adult. Tickets at the door will be $5.

Tickets can be purchased at the following locations: BancFirst on Harrison in Shawnee, in Seminole and Tecumseh, Benedict Street Market, Exxon/Mobil Chemical, First National Bank in Shawnee and Holdenville, Dr. Dick Deem's office, The Groves, Hartoon Jewelers, House of Flowers, Mayme's Miss and Mrs., Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, Pierre's Cleaners, Shawnee Cleaners, Shawnee Feed Center, Shepherd's Men's Wear, Tecumseh Tag Agency and the Greater Shawnee Area Chamber of Commerce.
