Monroe County Proposes Pesticide Law

There is a proposed Monroe County law that would require commercial pesticide applicators to give neighbors within 150 feet of where they're working, 48 hours notice before spraying chemicals.

Bob Ottley, owner of One Step Tree and Lawn Care and a past president of the Professional Lawn Care Association of America, believes it's impractical, costly and unnecessary. "It's a real bad idea," he said.

He also believes if the law were passed here, local lawn care specialists would do the same thing as their counterparts in 7 New York Counties which have adopted written notification laws. "To get around the notification, everybody goes to a granular application," he said; adding, "You actually end up using more pesticides on the property because you can't spot treat as easily with granular as you can with liquid."

A host of environmental groups along with the Breast Cancer Coalition, are in support of the proposed notification law, and turned out in droves to say so before Monroe County lawmakers last night. They wore yellow.

Ottley and his group were there too, wearing green to signify their positions in a battle in which whoever loses will probably end up seeing red.

Ottley suggest a "you will call" registry, kind of like the "do not call" registry where County residents could check off, through a post card or when they pay taxes, that they wish to be notified when pesticides will be sprayed nearby.

Ottley believes it would be simpler, cheaper, and keep everyone happy.
